Sharjah’s Ruler has approved designs and location for a new ‘Sports City’ in the emirate.
This city will have 4 different sports complexes, (one for each team, plus individual sports) It will be constructed at the location of Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah’s choosing.
Ali bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, member of the Executive Council and Head of the Sharjah Department of Public Works (SDPW), stated this in a telephone interview on the “Direct Line” program, which was aired on Sharjah Radio and Television.
According to Al Suwaidi, the Ruler of Sharjah himself drew the plan for the city which includes a main square with four main roads extending out to the city. These roads are the road from Al Madam, the road to Al Badayer, the road leading to Mahafiz and Al Bataeh, and the road from Sharjah Sports City. At the centre of this main square will be the ‘Sports City Stadium’.
Al Suwaidi noted that the stadium is the “first nucleus” and phase one of the Sports City project. Its been architecturally designed to be an icon, a bird in flight over sand dunes.
The structure consists of two parts the platform and grandstand, which resemble the undulating sand dunes of the surrounding area, and a large cover in the shape of a bird with outstretched wings. This cover is of a unique color- at least it changes colors throughout the day- silver when the sun is reflecting off of it, and a golden-red at night.
The design is environmentally conscious, harmonising with the natural characteristics of the site and reflecting the attributes of an athlete, akin to the falcon’s keen eyesight, speed, and strength.
The stadium has been designed to meet all the requirements for hosting local, regional, and global events and tournaments.
Al Suwaidi added, “In accordance with the directives of Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, we will immediately proceed with completing the detailed designs for the Sports City Stadium and commence its construction to ensure it is ready to serve athletes, all clubs in the emirate, and the sports sector as soon as possible.”
