Dubai’s Al Khail road upgrade: Two new bridges open

Two major bridges on Al Khail Road in the direction of Jebel Ali – one at Zaa’beel and the other at Al Quoz 1 – have been inaugurated, allowing 8,000 vehicles to travel through a 1,350-meter stretch per hour.

The RTA declared on Sunday that 80% of the Al Khail Road Development Project is finished, with two out of five planned bridges now open. The project includes building 3,300-meter-long bridges and widening lanes over 6,820 meters.

These enhancements extended to seven locations along Al Khail Road, including Al Jaddaf, Business Bay, Zaa’beel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadir Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle. The goal of the project is to shorten travel time by 30%, boost the capacity of current intersections and bridges by 19,600 vehicles per hour, improve traffic flow on Al Khail Road, address traffic conflicts on flyovers, and maintain a constant and seamless traffic flow.

The initial bridge to open can be found at Zaa’beel. It links traffic from Zaa’beel Palace Street and Oud Metha Street to Al Khail Road heading to Jebel Ali. The bridge, which is 700 meters long, can accommodate 4,800 vehicles per hour with its three lanes.

The second bridge that was opened can be found in Al Quoz 1. It connects the traffic coming from Al Meydan Street to Al Khail Road heading to Jebel Ali. The bridge, which has two lanes, spans 650 meters and can accommodate a flow of 3,200 vehicles in one hour.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, stated that the project is in line with the instructions of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, to improve the road infrastructure for the development of Dubai. We aim to meet the demands of urban expansion and population increase and enhance traffic circulation, under the guidance of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence.

The Al Khail Road Development Project aims to create new road corridors that run parallel to and support existing roads like Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. Al Khail Road is a key main road in Dubai, running from the Business Bay Crossing to where it meets Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. Al Tayer explained that it includes five lanes going in each direction, with the possibility of widening to over six lanes in certain areas.

Site 1 and 2

The project involves enhancements at seven locations on Al Khail Road. The expansion project at Site 1 in Al Jaddaf includes adding a new lane to enhance traffic flow towards Deira. The capacity of the road between Oud Metha Street and Financial Centre Street is increased by 2,000 vehicles per hour. In addition, a three-lane bridge spanning 700 meters and capable of accommodating 4,800 vehicles per hour is being built to link traffic from Zaa’beel Palace Street and Oud Metha Street to Al Khail Road leading to Jebel Ali. Furthermore, there are plans for enhancements on surface roads spanning 850 meters to connect traffic from Al Khail Road to Financial Centre Street leading to Sheikh Zayed Road,” Al Tayer clarified.

Site 2 in Meydan area on Al Khail Road is positioned between Al Meydan Street and Ras Al Khor Street intersections. The project involves building a 610-meter-long two-lane bridge that can accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour, facilitating traffic flow from Meydan Street to Al Khail Road towards Deira. He also mentioned that projects include enhancements to surface roads spanning 1,550 meters to link traffic from Al Khail Road to Ras Al Khor Street.

Site 3 and 4

Site 3 is located in Al Quoz 1 on Al Khail Road, situated between the crossroads of Al Meydan Street and Al Waha Street. The project includes building a 650-meter long bridge with two lanes, capable of accommodating 3,200 vehicles per hour, that will link Meydan Street to Al Khail Road heading towards Jebel Ali. Al Tayer also mentioned that projects include enhancements to surface roads spanning 2,170 meters, linking Al Khail Road to Al Waha Street and Latifa Bint Hamdan Street.

Site 4 is located in Ghadir Al Tair on Al Khail Road, situated between Al Meydan Street and Latifa Bint Hamdan Street intersections. Projects such as building a two-lane bridge that is 640 meters in length and can accommodate 3,200 vehicles per hour are being undertaken to smooth the flow of traffic from Latifa Bint Hamdan Street to Al Khail Road heading towards Deira. Al Tayer also mentioned that projects will involve enhancements to surface roads stretching over 1,350 meters to connect traffic from Al Khail Road to Al Meydan Street.

Site 5

Site 5 is located in Jumeirah Village Circle on Al Khail Road, situated between the crossroads of Hessa Street and Al Khamila Street. The project includes building a 700-meter long double-lane bridge capable of handling 3,200 vehicles per hour to link traffic between Al Khail Road and Hessa Street. Al Tayer concluded that the works involved enhancing surface roads for over 900 meters to connect traffic from Jumeirah Village Circle to Al Khail Road heading towards Deira.

Site 6 and 7

In May of last year, RTA finished the expansion projects at Site 6 and Site 7 located in Al Jaddaf and Business Bay. At Site 6, the project involved widening Al Khail Road at Al Jaddaf by extending the surface and adding an extra lane to enhance traffic movement towards Deira across a 600-meter section, boosting the road’s ability by 2,000 vehicles per hour.

The project at Site 7 focused on widening Al Khail Road near the entrance to Business Bay by constructing a new lane that is 435 meters long. This was done to improve traffic flow towards Business Bay and enhance safety for drivers heading towards Jebel Ali. As per the plan, three bridges are scheduled to be operational at three different locations by the end of October to accommodate traffic heading towards Deira.
