The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) on Wednesday warned residents of the UAE of foggy days ahead, particularly on major highways like the Dubai-Abu Dhabi route.
In an interview, Dr. Ahmed Habib, a climate expert, said that the country will experience increased fog formation due to high humidity and unstable weather conditions.
While urging the residents to remain vigilant and adhere to safety warnings, he said, “We expect fog to form in the coming days, particularly between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as well as in Al Ain and certain Western areas.”
High humidity and unstable weather conditions
However, the UAE has been having some really freaky weather lately, it has been raining a lot and it even hailed in Wadi Hilo in Sharjah. Well, Dr. Habib says that it is this high that is sitting over us that is producing all the high humidity, or at least the high humidity at night and early in the morning, and that is why it is so foggy.
While the mercury hits a scorching 45 to 46 degrees Celsius, the stifling humidity adds an extra layer of discomfort. Dr. Habib stressed the importance of acknowledging that although the temperatures are high the dampness amplifies the heat, making it feel even more oppressive.
Effects on regions and rainfall trends
On Monday, Kalba Shokah Road in the Eastern Region saw some rainfall, while light showers were reported near Shawka Al Muinai Road in Ras Al Khaimah. The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has also issued a warning due to cloud formation that could bring more rain, strong winds, and dusty conditions.
Dr. Habib shared observations about the weather patterns highlighting that the rain, in Fujairah and other eastern areas is typical for this time of year. He explained that this is influenced by a pressure system extending from the East Indian monsoon. The mountains, in eastern UAE draw moisture, from the Arabian Sea or Oman Sea, leading to cloud formation and subsequent rainfall.
Transitioning to Autumn
As summer draws to a close Dr. Habib noted that the temperatures will begin to cool down, particularly in the evenings and early mornings. He remarked, “With August coming to an end and September approaching we can anticipate a shift, in the weather. The official end of summer is on September 23rd marking the onset of autumn he continued.”
