UAE weather alert: Rain, dust, and rough seas expected

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) said low clouds could appear over the east coast and part northern UAE with a slight chance for light rain on Monday August 19.

Due to the current weather conditions, NCM has also issued an orange alert for dusty and windy weather with wind gusts up to 40 km/h at times resulting in blowing dust/sand reducing horizontal visibility less than 3000 m particularly over some internal areas. The alert is in effect through 11 a. m. Wednesday, according to the weather service.

In a tweet X (formerly Twitter), Abu Dhabi Police reminded motorists to drive carefully and warned that visibility has been reduced. With severe winter weather conditions present, the CAA urges drivers to avoid significant distractions like using a phone while behind the wheel.

Meanwhile, the NCM also put out a yellow alert for rough seas in both Arabian Gulf and Oman Sea where offshore waters may experience 4 to 6 foot high waves. A weather warning posted today remains in effect until 1 pm.

On Sunday, a similar yellow alert was issued for fresh to strong winds with gusts up to 50 km/h, causing dust and sand to fly throughout the area.

Today’s weather is anticipated to be partly overcast, with the chance of complete cloud cover in the south and east, which might lead to rain along the east coast. Temperatures in Abu Dhabi and Dubai will reach 43ºC and 41ºC, respectively. In hilly areas, temperatures may dip as low as 2ºC.

Residents may expect mild to moderate breezes that can periodically strengthen and contribute to dusty conditions, especially in the country’s north and east. The water conditions will vary, with the Arabian Gulf and Oman water seeing mild to moderate waves that may become harsh at times.
