Can AI education prepare UAE students for the future?

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape industries globally, experts in the UAE view this as an opportunity to enhance education.

They are advocating for the integration of AI into school curricula, believing that teaching this transformative technology will better prepare students for the future and enable them to create innovative solutions.

Countries around the world have already begun incorporating AI into educational programs at both school and university levels, and experts in the UAE are urging for similar initiatives. They argue that introducing AI early in students’ education will equip them with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market.

Dr. Mohammed Al Kuwaiti, chairman of the UAE Government Cyber Security Council, highlighted the importance of early education in AI. “By gaining knowledge and experience early, students will be better equipped for future jobs that may require advanced skills in this field. Teaching AI in schools is not just an addition to the curriculum, but rather an investment in the future of students,” he said.

Experts propose a comprehensive strategy for AI education that includes developing tailored curricula, assessment methods, and teacher training. They suggest that the Ministry of Education and other educational authorities adopt strategic plans to maximize the benefits of AI, with a focus on practical applications. This includes integrated programs covering programming, data analysis, and machine learning.

Professor Ghanem Kashwani, a consultant at the Society of Engineers, emphasized that AI education should align with state policies, labor market needs, and ethical considerations. He noted that AI, when introduced in schools, can inspire students to explore how this technology can improve the world around them. “Through projects and practical applications, students can develop new ideas and innovative solutions that extend beyond the limits of current knowledge,” Professor Kashwani said.

He also addressed concerns about AI potentially diminishing human intelligence, comparing it to past fears about calculators and automatic drawing programs in engineering. “AI is a tool for accomplishing tasks and is not expected to diminish human intelligence or encourage laziness among students,” he clarified.

As AI becomes increasingly integral to various aspects of life, the experts agree that its role in education will continue to expand. They envision a future where AI enhances traditional teaching methods, providing unique capabilities like chatbots and virtual teachers that support independent learning.
