In a bid to promote road safety as students return to school, the UAE is offering motorists a chance to reduce their black points by four if they adhere to traffic rules on the first day of the new academic year.
To benefit from this initiative, drivers need to sign a pledge and maintain accident-free driving on August 26.
How to Qualify: Motorists must sign a six-point pledge on the Ministry of Interior’s website using their UAE Pass. The pledge includes:
- Maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
- Prioritizing pedestrians at crossings.
- Always wearing a seatbelt.
- Adhering to speed limits.
- Avoiding use of handheld mobile phones while driving.
- Yielding to emergency vehicles and official convoys.
Timeline for Discount: If all conditions are met, four black points will be removed from the driver’s record automatically on September 14. A certificate of participation will be sent to the motorist’s email upon signing the pledge.
What Are Black Points? Black points are penalties for serious traffic violations, with the number varying based on the severity. For instance, reckless driving can lead to 23 black points, while not wearing a seatbelt results in four points. Accumulating 24 points within a year leads to driving license suspension.
Purpose of the Initiative: Brigadier Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, chairman of the Federal Traffic Council, emphasized that the campaign aims to foster responsible driving habits and create a safer traffic environment. It also serves as an incentive to encourage compliance with traffic laws throughout the year.
