How to apply for your Emirates ID: A step-by-step guide

Applying for your Emirates ID is a critical process for residents in the UAE, as it is an essential document issued by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP).

Following the correct steps and meeting all requirements can help you avoid delays and ensure a smooth application process.

How Long Does It Take to Receive Your Emirates ID?

According to Mohamed Shafi, manager at Access Typing Centre in Dubai, if all your documents and details are accurate and up-to-date, you can expect to receive your Emirates ID within five to six working days. The application process for the Emirates ID is linked to your residency visa application.

Steps to Expedite Your Emirates ID Application

1. Fingerprint Scanning

New applicants must provide biometric data, including fingerprint scans, within 30 days of applying. This requirement is compulsory for applicants over the age of 15 and for new residents. Shafi noted that if more than ten years have passed since your last biometric scan, you might need to rescan your fingerprints.

Although the fingerprinting process typically takes less than a day, Shafiq Muhammad, Chief Supervisor at Horizon Gate Government Transactions Centre, warned that delays might occur if immediate slots are unavailable. If needed, you can reschedule your biometric appointment online through the ICP website or the QR code on your application form.

2. Medical Fitness Test

You must undergo a medical fitness test and obtain a medical fitness certificate, which is usually issued within a day. The approval process for the Emirates ID and residency visa generally takes about a week after passing the test.

3. Health Insurance Coverage

Depending on your emirate, health insurance coverage might be mandatory. In Abu Dhabi, employers and sponsors are legally required to provide health insurance. In Dubai, your employer must arrange your health insurance, and if you are sponsoring your family, you need to secure their coverage.

While health insurance is not yet mandatory in the northern emirates, most employers provide some form of coverage. Starting January 1, 2025, a nationwide mandate will require private sector employers to provide health insurance for employees and domestic workers. Contact any insurance company or broker in the UAE for assistance.

4. Accurate Contact Details

Ensure you provide the correct mobile number and email address in your application. ICP uses these details to communicate the status of your application and delivery information. Once your Emirates ID is issued, you will receive an SMS from ICP with pickup instructions.

5. Passport Validity

Submit a passport copy with at least six months’ validity when applying for your Emirates ID. This requirement is necessary whether you are renewing or applying for a new residence visa. If your passport is nearing expiration, renew it through your country’s consulate, embassy, or online to avoid delays.
