Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina resigns amid mass protests

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post on Monday, according to multiple sources, including the army, the High Commission in Delhi, and various media outlets.

The resignation follows intense mass protests that culminated in thousands of demonstrators storming her official residence in Dhaka. Reports indicate that Hasina, along with her sister, departed for India in a military helicopter.

Protesters Storm Prime Minister’s Residence

The situation in Dhaka turned chaotic as thousands of protesters breached the premises of the Ganabhaban Palace, the Prime Minister’s official residence. Bangladeshi television channel Channel 24 broadcasted images of jubilant crowds running into the residence, overturning furniture, smashing glass door panels, and taking various items, including books and a live chicken.

Hasina Flees Amid Unrest

A source close to Hasina confirmed that the 76-year-old leader had fled Dhaka to “a safer place” with her sister. The source added that Hasina had intended to record a speech but was unable to do so due to the volatile situation.

Rising Death Toll Amid Violence

The protests have resulted in significant violence, with the death toll reaching at least 300 people. On Sunday alone, 94 people were killed, marking the deadliest day in more than a month of anti-government demonstrations. The Prime Minister’s resignation was a “possibility” following the violent clashes.

“You see, the situation is very volatile. What is happening, I myself don’t know,” Law Minister Anisul Huq told Reuters, highlighting the uncertainty and chaos enveloping the nation.

Internet Access Restricted

In response to the escalating protests, internet access across Bangladesh was widely restricted on Monday, according to service providers and monitors. The restrictions came a day after the deadliest demonstrations in weeks, with student activists calling for a march to the capital in defiance of a nationwide curfew to demand Hasina’s resignation.

A Nation in Turmoil

The resignation of Sheikh Hasina marks a significant turning point for Bangladesh, which has been embroiled in some of the worst violence since its independence over five decades ago. The ongoing unrest and high death toll have drawn international attention, with observers closely watching the developments in this South Asian nation.
