Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency, coordinated a secret mission to place explosives in three rooms of a guest house frequented by Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas’s political faction, claimed an article in a British newspaper.
According to the report, two Iranian security agents were responsible for carrying out the operation.
The report states that Ismail Haniyeh often resided in the building that was targeted. Originally, the intention was to carry out the assassination of Haniyeh in May at the time of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi’s funeral after he died in a plane crash. Nonetheless, the operation was called off due to the high risk of failure and the significant presence of a crowd.
The British newspaper alleges that Iranian officials have CCTV footage showing agents entering and exiting the rooms swiftly. Allegedly, the explosives were remotely detonated from outside Iran, but investigators recovered material from two of the rooms during the probe.
A representative from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, as reported by a British newspaper, doubted that Mossad employed individuals from the Ansar al-Mahdi security unit, responsible for guarding high-ranking officials, to conduct the mission.
Ismail Haniyeh assassination
Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, died in an Israeli airstrike in Tehran on July 31. Thousands of mourners attended his funeral in Tehran, which was overseen by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. Haniyeh’s body was then taken to Qatar for burial following the funeral.
If the reports regarding this incident are accurate, it underscores the complex and perilous world of international espionage and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
