Observing the motorbikes maneuvering through traffic and overtaking stationary cars might lead one to ponder: wouldn’t it be exciting to cruise on motorcycles along the highways of Dubai, with vistas of either the cityscape or the sandy dunes? Should you opt for this experience, the initial step would be to obtain a license.
Prior to considering the purchase of your ideal motorcycle, it’s important to acquire a motorcycle rider’s license. The procedure for obtaining one is comparable to getting a driver’s license, and even the expenses for classes and other fees are similar.
To qualify for a license:
- you must be at least 17 years old.
- Female students under 21 years old who are studying with a male instructor may need to provide a no-objection certificate from their sponsors.
To apply, you will need:
- An Emirates ID that is valid
- A copy of both your passport and a valid residence visa
- A report stating the results of your eye test
- A learner’s permit from the Roads and Transport Authority, which your driving school can help you obtain
- If you have a valid motorcycle licence from another country, you can submit a copy. Depending on specific conditions, your class hours may be reduced.
- Those with a driver visa should provide a medical fitness report from RTA-approved centers.
- Additional documentation may be necessary for certain groups, such as diplomats, individuals with disabilities, and residents of other emirates.
Here is the information about classes for motorcycle riders offered by all driving institutes in the emirate. Options include:
- Emirates Driving Institute
- Belhasa Driving Centre
- Al Ahli Driving Centre
- Dubai Driving Centre
- Galadari Motor Driving Centre
- Drive Dubai

The classes and RTA exams for motorcyclists follow a similar structure. They consist of theory lessons and practical training sessions. Typically, beginners are required to complete 20 hours of on-site classes, but individuals with valid foreign licenses may qualify for reduced hours.
In practical sessions, it is essential for learners to be dressed in safety shoes and long-sleeved shirts.
The motorcycle riding courses encompass all safety regulations and fundamental skills, including maneuvering at high speeds, negotiating winding roads, handling tight turns at intersections, riding on narrow streets, and reversing out of parking areas.
Participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate their newly acquired skills during a series of evaluations.
Examination Guidelines
Similar to driver education, the initial assessment for prospective motorcyclists involves a theoretical examination, encompassing knowledge of traffic regulations, safe freeway riding, route planning, and proper actions in the event of an accident.
Following the theoretical examination, practical instruction commences. The subsequent evaluation would be the RTA yard/internal test, typically conducted on the premises of the driving school.
Differing from the smart yard test for car drivers, which primarily focuses on parking skills, this test assesses the turning and curve navigation abilities of motorcycle riders. Additionally, it includes exercises on slow riding, emergency braking, and judgment of turning speeds.
After successfully completing the internal test, a learner can move on to the next phase. Following the RTA yard test, some driving schools provide practical training, while others evaluate a rider’s road skills internally and may offer additional classes if needed.
According to RTA regulations, the subsequent exam to pass is the final test, during which learners will be evaluated while driving on the road. Upon passing this test, the license will be issued.
