UAE authorities have declared a two-month grace period starting September 1 for residence visa violators, offering them a chance to regularize their status or leave the country without incurring fines.
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) announced on Thursday that this initiative aims to provide violators with an opportunity to comply with the law. This move reflects the UAE’s values of compassion and tolerance. Detailed procedures for this amnesty will be released soon.
Understanding Residence Visa Rules
The validity of residence visas in the UAE depends on the type and sponsor. Sponsored visas can be valid for 1, 2, or 3 years, while self-sponsored visas can last up to 5 or 10 years. Residents who fail to renew their visas or leave the country before their visas expire face fines.
As of 2023, overstay penalties have been standardized to Dh50 per day for residents, tourists, and visit visa holders, down from Dh100. Residents have a grace period of up to six months to remain in the UAE after their residence permit is canceled or expires, provided they intend to renew their visas.
For those with sponsored visas, the dependent’s visa must be renewed before it expires, and it cannot exceed the validity of the sponsor’s visa. Renewed visas allow expats to continue living legally in the UAE without facing fines or legal consequences.
This grace period is a significant opportunity for residents to ensure they comply with visa regulations and avoid penalties.
