Sharjah’s innovative ‘rain street’ at Zawaya Walk is gaining immense popularity, and it’s set to become even more appealing.
Obaid Al Tunaiji, the visionary behind this viral city attraction, has announced plans to enhance the experience by introducing cooler artificial rain showers.
Al Tunaiji revealed that his team noticed the water used for the rain was warm. “We will make the rains cooler to further lower the water temperatures and allow people to enjoy it even more,” he said. Al Tunaiji also assured that the water used is “clean and sterilised.”
Zawaya Walk, lined with palm trees, has gone viral on social media since it started offering free artificial rain shows this summer. In the midst of the sweltering heat, visitors can stroll through the area, with or without an umbrella, and stay cool.
Each rain show, featuring thunder-like sound effects for a realistic experience, lasts approximately five minutes. The shows run every hour from 9 am to 12 pm and from 5 pm to 11 pm.
This unique attraction has turned the shopping destination into a popular hangout spot, not just for the rain shows but also for its variety of retail outlets, shops, restaurants, and cafes. The open complex includes an outdoor walkway, an artificial lake, and a bridge connecting the two ends of the building.
The Idea Behind the Rain Shows
Al Tunaiji and other developers noticed a significant drop in visitor turnout during the summer months. “We started brainstorming what we could do to attract visitors even during the summer. The first step was planting trees that would provide shade and reduce the heat,” explained Al Tunaiji. Over 300 trees have been planted at the site to create a cooler atmosphere.
Initially, the developers considered using misting fans, but Al Tunaiji was concerned they might make the atmosphere humid and uncomfortable. They then discussed the possibility of artificial rain, as rain typically cools the environment.
Once the idea was finalized, the team decided to implement it themselves without hiring specialized companies. Their engineers executed the plan to suit the location’s specific requirements.
As the summer peaks in the UAE, with temperatures soaring above 50ºC, most establishments have moved activities indoors. However, outdoor destinations like Zawaya Walk are helping visitors enjoy the outdoors without feeling too hot.
