Children and dependents of Filipino expatriates now have the opportunity to apply for government scholarships that can provide allowances of up to Php60,000 (Dh3,785) per school year.
The application period for this year runs from July 26 to August 16, according to an announcement by the authorities.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa) has made available two scholarship programs: the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) and the OFW Dependent Scholarship Program (ODSP).
Understanding EDSP
The EDSP is designed for the children and dependents of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are currently in their second to fifth year of college. Freshman scholarships are awarded based on the results of national science and technology exams.
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be no older than 30 years.
- Have a General Weighted Average (GWA) of at least a B or 85% in all academic and non-academic subjects from the previous school year.
Successful applicants will receive up to Php60,000 (Dh3,785) each school year until they graduate.
Details of ODSP
The ODSP offers financial support of Php20,000 (Dh1,260) per school year to dependents of OFWs earning a monthly salary of not more than $600 or Php34,000.
Criteria for incoming freshmen include:
- Must be single.
- Must be incoming Grade 12 or currently enrolled as Grade 12.
- Must be no older than 21 years.
- Must have a passing grade.
Criteria for those in their second to fifth year of college include:
- Must be single.
- Must be no older than 30 years.
- Must have a passing grade.
