As summer temperatures rise, motorists are being advised to include fire protection in their car insurance policies. The heat can significantly elevate the chances of vehicles catching fire, making comprehensive coverage essential.
While it’s mandatory for car owners to insure their vehicles, many opt for the most affordable option: third-party liability (TPL) insurance. This basic plan only covers damages to the other party’s vehicle and their medical bills in case of an accident. Unfortunately, TPL does not protect against other incidents, such as natural disasters, flooding, or vehicle fires.
“Only a comprehensive car insurance plan can fully protect you and others in case of an accident. Comprehensive coverage includes theft, total loss of the vehicle, fire, natural disasters, and vandalism,” said Neeraj Gupta, CEO of Policybazaar.ae, in an interview with Khaleej Times. He emphasized that while comprehensive insurance may cost an additional Dh700 to Dh800 for sedans or SUVs, it provides invaluable peace of mind for car owners.
Rising Risks of Vehicle Fires
Recently, Dubai Police issued a warning on social media, stating that the hot summer months bring a heightened risk of vehicle fires. Everyday items like perfumes and mobile phone chargers can ignite under high temperatures. Authorities are urging drivers to avoid leaving flammable items—such as e-cigarettes, lighters, and power banks—in their vehicles.
To help mitigate these risks, Dubai Police are offering free car inspection services until the end of August, encouraging regular vehicle maintenance.
Key Safety Checks
Road safety experts recommend several important checks to prevent vehicle fires:
- Inspect Wiring: Look for damaged or loose wiring in the vehicle.
- Monitor Fuel and Oil Levels: Be cautious of sudden changes in fuel or oil levels and engine temperature.
- Smell and Sight Checks: If you notice a burning rubber or metal smell, or see smoke coming from the engine or brakes, pull over immediately.
- Fuses and Noises: Repeatedly blown fuses may indicate faulty wiring. Loud noises from the exhaust or any oil spills after servicing also require attention.
- Hoses and Caps: Replace worn or loose hoses and ensure the oil cap is properly fitted.
A Pressing Concern
According to RoadSafety UAE, vehicle fires are a serious issue in the UAE, especially during the summer. They highlight that poor vehicle maintenance is responsible for 75% of vehicle fires, while only 3% result from collisions. Tragically, 57% of fire-related deaths are linked to vehicle collisions, with many injuries occurring when civilians try to extinguish the fire themselves.
Rising Insurance Premiums
Compounding the situation, insurance companies have raised premiums by up to 30% since May 1, following severe rainfall that caused extensive flooding in April. This unfortunate experience taught many car owners the hard way that TPL policies offer limited protection. In the aftermath, there was a dramatic increase—100%—in demand for comprehensive insurance as motorists sought better coverage against various risks.
“Comprehensive insurance not only protects against flooding but also provides vital coverage for fire-related incidents,” Gupta reiterated.
As summer heats up, now is the time for motorists to reassess their insurance policies. Upgrading to comprehensive coverage can safeguard against the unexpected, ensuring peace of mind during the hot months ahead.
