Abu Dhabi court convicts 53 in landmark terror trial

The Abu Dhabi Federal Appeals Court delivered a significant verdict convicting 53 individuals linked to the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood organization in Case No. 87 of 2023 – State Security Offenses.

This case, commonly known as the ‘Justice and Dignity Committee’ trial, concluded with penalties ranging from life imprisonment to hefty fines.

The court sentenced 43 defendants to life imprisonment for their roles in establishing and managing the ‘Justice and Dignity Committee’ to perpetrate terrorist activities within the country. Five others received 15-year sentences for supporting the ‘Reform Call’ Organization through social media advocacy, fully aware of its anti-state objectives. Additionally, five defendants were sentenced to ten years in prison and fined Dhs10 million each for laundering funds intended for terrorist operations.

Furthermore, six companies implicated in these crimes were fined Dhs20 million each, with their assets and properties confiscated, and their operations closed down.

The verdict acquitted one defendant and dismissed charges against 24 others for their alleged involvement in supporting the organization financially.

The court proceedings spanned over ten hearings, ensuring due process and the defendants’ rights were upheld throughout. Witness testimonies, technical reports, and confessions were crucial in establishing guilt.

The ruling underscores the severity of terrorist financing and organizational activities that threaten national security and stability. It highlights the court’s commitment to justice under current laws, allowing for appeal before the Federal Supreme Court.

This trial marks a pivotal moment in the UAE’s efforts to combat terrorism and uphold legal principles, emphasizing non-retroactive criminal penalties and safeguards against double jeopardy.
