How to obtain a driving licence in Dubai: A step-by-step guide

Are you an eager young adult who just turned 18 and can’t wait to hit the road? Or perhaps a long-term resident finally considering getting a driving licence because, as they say, better late than never?

In Dubai, obtaining a driving licence is a systematic process overseen by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Here’s a simplified guide to help you navigate the steps:

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility

To get a driving licence in Dubai, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of Dubai.
  • Be at least 17 years and 6 months old (you can start training at this age, but the licence is issued at 18).
  • Be medically fit.
  • Enroll in and complete a course at an RTA-approved driving institute.
  • Pass all required tests.

For applicants with special needs, the process involves:

  • Opening a training file based on medical report recommendations.
  • Setting a number of training sessions in coordination with the Drivers Affairs department, tailored to the type of disability.

Step 2: Register at an RTA-Approved Driving Institute

Choose from one of these RTA-approved driving institutes:

  • Emirates Driving Institute
  • Belhasa Driving Centre
  • Al Ahli Driving Centre
  • Dubai Driving Centre
  • Galadari Motor Driving Centre
  • Drive Dubai

Step 3: Pass the Optical Test

An eye test from an RTA-authorised body is mandatory. Vision enhancement devices like glasses or contact lenses are permissible if approved. After passing the eye test, you can open your file at the driving school, pay the required fees, and choose a suitable course.

Step 4: Attend Theoretical Classes and Take the Test

After passing the eye test and opening your file, attend theoretical classes that cover topics such as risk perception, traffic laws, road signage, and safety procedures. You can take a mock test to prepare for the theoretical exam, which is available in multiple languages. You must pass this test before moving on to practical training.

Step 5: Practical Training and Tests

Once you pass the theoretical test, you can begin practical training. The RTA requires 20 hours of practical training for new applicants. After completing the classes, you must pass several tests:

  • RTA Parking Test: Conducted in the driving school’s RTA smart yard, assessed through smart cameras.
  • Assessment Test: Conducted by a driving school examiner, replicating the RTA final road test.
  • RTA Final Road Test: Conducted by an RTA official on the road, assessing your overall driving skills, risk awareness, and adherence to traffic rules.

Step 6: Obtain Your Licence

After passing all the tests, you can collect your driving licence. This marks the end of your journey through the theoretical classes, practical training, and various assessments.

By following these steps, you can navigate the process of obtaining a driving licence in Dubai with ease. Stay informed, prepared, and confident as you embark on this exciting journey towards becoming a licensed driver.
