UAE announces public holiday on this day

The crescent moon marking the beginning of Muharram 1446 AH was photographed from Abu Dhabi on Saturday, July 6.

The UAE’s Astronomy Centre shared an image of the faint crescent, captured by the Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory at 3 PM UAE time.

In light of this, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre) announced that UAE residents will enjoy a public holiday on Sunday, July 7, to celebrate the Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year. This date corresponds to Muharram 1 on the Islamic calendar, signaling the start of the new Hijri year 1446 AH.

The announcement provides a welcome break for residents, marking a day of reflection and celebration. Both public and private sector employees will benefit from this holiday. Similarly, neighboring Oman has also declared July 7 as a holiday for both public and private sectors, offering a long weekend for those working a five-day week.

Following the Hijri New Year, UAE residents can anticipate another public holiday for the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)’s birthday, as detailed in the official 2024 holiday list released by the UAE Cabinet. The final official holiday of the year will be a long weekend in celebration of National Day, providing additional time off for residents.

In addition to public holidays, UAE employees are entitled to 30 annual leave days, ensuring ample opportunity for rest and rejuvenation throughout the year.
