Dubai expands intelligent traffic systems to cover entire road network by 2026

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has commenced the study and design for Phase II of its Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Improvement and Expansion Project.

This phase aims to extend the coverage of the emirate’s main road network from the current 60% to a complete 100% by 2026. Consequently, the road network covered by the ITS will expand from 480km to 710km.

In the initial phase, the RTA installed 116 new traffic surveillance cameras, increasing the total to 311. Additionally, 100 new incident monitoring and vehicle counting devices were installed, raising the total to 227. The authority also set up 112 Variable Message Signs (VMS) to provide real-time road condition updates, 115 travel time and speed measurement devices, 17 weather sensor stations, and constructed 660km of electric power lines and an 820km fibre optic network.

Innovative Technologies

The Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Center in Al Barsha, one of the most advanced traffic control centres globally, manages the traffic in the emirate. The centre employs cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things, and advanced communication systems to offer smart services and collect critical data. This integrated platform, known as “iTraffic,” enhances decision-making through AI technologies and big data analysis.

Project Benefits

According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, the project has already improved incident monitoring by 63% and reduced response times by 20% through the use of VMS and enhanced integration with the Enterprise Command and Control Centre and Dubai Police General HQ.

“This expansion will enhance road network management and traffic flow through better monitoring, faster response times to incidents, and providing instant information to the public about the condition of the road network via new Variable Message Signs (VMS) and smart applications to help distribute traffic effectively. The project enhances personal mobility by integrating modern and advanced technologies and self-driving transport solutions thanks to providing a comprehensive ITS infrastructure designed to meet current and future needs,” added Al Tayer.

The ITS Improvement and Expansion Project signifies Dubai’s commitment to adopting the latest intelligent technologies and software, such as Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS). It positions Dubai alongside leading cities like Singapore and Seoul in the field of advanced transport technologies, aiming to create a seamless and efficient traffic management system for its residents and visitors.
