Iran will hold an unexpected presidential election on June 28, following the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash.
In an interview to Khaleej Times, Iranian expatriates residing in the UAE will have the opportunity to participate in the election, with polling stations set up at the Iranian embassy in Abu Dhabi and consulate in Dubai, as confirmed by Iranian Ambassador Reza Ameri.
The sudden election date was brought forward from 2025 after President Raisi’s untimely demise on May 19, which deeply affected the nation. Thousands gathered in Tehran to pay their respects, highlighting the profound loss felt by Iranians both at home and abroad.
Despite the tragedy, Ambassador Ameri assured continuity in Iran’s administration, emphasizing that the transition is proceeding smoothly under the guidance of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Reflecting on President Raisi’s legacy, Ambassador Ameri described him as deeply connected with the Iranian people, known for his hands-on approach in addressing national issues. Raisi’s tragic passing occurred during a routine visit to inaugurate a joint dam project near the Azerbaijan border, underscoring his commitment to infrastructure development and public service.
Beyond internal matters, Ameri reiterated Iran’s steadfast support for Palestine amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza, condemning Israel’s military actions and advocating for the immediate cessation of hostilities. He stressed Iran’s stance that the root cause of the issue lies in Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories and called for international recognition of Palestinian rights and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The Iranian ambassador also expressed gratitude for the condolences extended by global and regional leaders, including UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, who attended President Raisi’s funeral in Tehran. As Iran prepares for the upcoming election amid mourning, the focus remains on honoring Raisi’s legacy while navigating significant geopolitical challenges.
