UAE cabinet approves new federal traffic law and key legislation

The UAE Cabinet, led by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, approved several significant legislations during a recent meeting, aiming to enhance various sectors in the country.

A new federal traffic law has been approved to modernize vehicle classifications and integrate advanced technologies on the roads. Sheikh Mohammed emphasized that the legislation is designed to accommodate the rapid global developments in the transport industry. The law will promote the use of self-driving vehicles and electric cars, while also regulating personal transportation means. It includes provisions for driving license exemptions, license suspensions, vehicle insurance, inspection, and driving school regulations.

Combatting Communicable Diseases

A new law targeting the prevention and management of communicable diseases has been introduced. This legislation provides a legal framework for addressing various diseases based on their nature, severity, and spread. It builds on the UAE’s successful strategies implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, including social distancing and vaccination programs, to protect public health.

Protection of Tourists

The UAE Cabinet approved the adoption of the International Code for the Protection of Tourists by the United Nations Tourism Organization. This code will guide tourism institutions in enhancing services for international visitors, reinforcing the UAE’s status as one of the safest global destinations.

Emirati Genome Programme

A groundbreaking federal decree was issued to regulate the use of the human genome under the Emirati Genome Programme. This initiative aims to map genetic and hereditary diseases in the UAE by collecting over 600,000 samples, with a goal to expand to one million. The program will include comprehensive pre-marital genetic screening and has trained over 1,000 medical personnel to support its efforts.

Money Laundering Regulations

The UAE has introduced a Unified List comprising 41 penalties to combat money laundering and terrorist financing. This new legislation ensures justice and simplifies procedures for complainants by providing flexible timelines to submit necessary documents to the court.

BRICS Membership

The UAE has joined the BRICS economic bloc, aiming to build economic bridges and maintain global economic relations. The Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank will represent the UAE in various BRICS working groups.

Accelerating Economic Growth

The Cabinet approved the formation of a working group, led by the Ministry of Economy, to develop the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FCCI). This group will foster new global partnerships and help local companies enter international markets, supporting the UAE’s economic growth.

Digital Transformation

With a focus on ethical AI use, the UAE Cabinet approved the Ethical Charter of Development and Use of AI. This ensures responsible technology use and respects human values. The UAE continues to advance its digital governance, promoting a paperless government and handling digital waste responsibly. Additionally, Dubai recently appointed 22 Chief AI Officers across various government entities to position the emirate as a global hub for AI solutions.

International Agreements

The UAE signed several international agreements, including a railway project with Oman and a wind power plant with Kazakhstan. Legal cooperation agreements were also signed with Kenya, Mauritius, Costa Rica, and Congo Brazzaville, covering extradition, mutual legal assistance, and the transfer of convicted persons.
