In a move to enhance healthcare services, Abu Dhabi’s National Health Insurance – Daman is introducing changes to its basic health insurance plan, effective July 1.
While the revamp brings expanded coverage to top-tier health facilities, some residents will have to pay higher premiums and co-payments.
The changes aim to provide access to world-class hospitals, previously reserved for prominent leaders and royals. Emirati-sponsored domestic helpers under 60 will see their premiums increase from Dh600 to Dh750. Other categories will also face adjusted premiums, details of which are yet to be announced.
Co-payments for some services will also rise. Currently, basic plan users don’t pay extra fees for in-patient services and one-day procedures, unless they exceed insurance coverage. From July 1, subscribers will have to pay Dh200 for each in-patient service and one-day procedure, capped at Dh500 per year. Diagnostic services and laboratory tests will now require a 20% co-payment, up to Dh50 per visit.
Medication coverage remains at Dh1,500 per year, with a 30% co-payment fee. However, residents will continue to receive an annual health insurance cover of Dh250,000 and access to over 1,250 healthcare facilities across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra region.
The changes are part of local government regulations to ensure community members receive the highest quality care. While some residents may face higher costs, the expanded coverage promises better healthcare services. As one resident said, “It’s a small price to pay for the peace of mind that comes with knowing I have access to the best healthcare facilities in Abu Dhabi.”
