The authorities of the United Arab Emirates announced on Friday, May 31 that there would be a midday break from 15 June to 15 September in 2024.
This is the 20th year in a row that this break will take place.
It prohibits work under direct sunlight and in open-air areas across the UAE between 12.30pm and 3.00pm.
How fine will be collected?
The authorities shall impose a fine of up to Dh5,000 for each employee working during the midday break, and up to Dh50,000 for several employees working during the break.
The Khaleej Times quoted the United Arab Emirates authorities as saying that some jobs are exempt from this policy.
Exemptions
Even during the midday breaks, works related to water supply or electricity, interruption of traffic, installation of asphalt or concrete on roadworks and other work relating to basic services may be carried out.
Companies will have to apply for authorisations allowing them to continue working during the holiday period.
Khaleej Times quoting Mohsin Al Nassi, Assistant Undersecretary for Inspection Affairs at the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) said implementing the Midday Break has become a deeply ingrained culture in the UAE’s business community and among private-sector companies in the country, given its role in ensuring the health and safety of workers, who we consider to be the most valuable resource of any company.
In order to ensure compliance, the Ministry shall also launch awareness campaigns and field visits at work locations.
