President Sheikh Mohamed will begin a state visit to China next Thursday, marking a significant step in the long-standing relationship between the UAE and China.
This visit comes at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, with whom Sheikh Mohamed will hold discussions aimed at strengthening the friendly ties between the two nations. The focus of their talks will include economic cooperation, development plans, and cultural exchange, according to the state news agency Wam.
Celebrating Diplomatic Milestones
The visit will also coincide with celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the UAE and China. This historic milestone underscores the deep and enduring partnership that has developed over the decades. As part of the celebrations, Sheikh Mohamed will attend the ministerial meeting of the Arab-Chinese Co-operation Forum.
A History of Collaboration
Sheikh Mohamed’s relationship with China is not new. In February 2022, he attended the opening ceremony of the 24th Winter Olympics in Beijing at President Xi’s invitation. During that visit, the leaders discussed ways to enhance the UAE-China comprehensive partnership, particularly in investment and economic sectors.
Formal diplomatic ties between the UAE and China were established in 1984, with a significant visit by the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, taking place six years later. Images from that trip famously show Sheikh Zayed visiting the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City, highlighting the cultural connections forged between the two nations.
In 2018, President Xi made a state visit to the UAE, further solidifying the relationship into a “comprehensive strategic partnership.” The following year, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, then Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, visited China to continue building on this partnership.
Strategic Partnerships and Global Initiatives
The UAE’s involvement in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, a major global infrastructure development strategy, and its status as a founding member of the China-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank highlight the strategic importance of the UAE-China relationship.
Asian Tour Highlights
Sheikh Mohamed’s engagement with China will follow a two-day state visit to South Korea, beginning on Tuesday. During this visit, he will meet South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. The UAE and South Korea share a special strategic partnership aimed at consolidating and enhancing their bilateral relations.
Sheikh Mohamed’s visits to South Korea and China signify a commitment to strengthening international partnerships and fostering economic and cultural ties across Asia.
